Marine Wildlife

Coastal Birds of PEI.

About Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province, but it is world-renowned for its stunning coastal scenery, rich marine life, and warm Island hospitality. Located in the heart of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, PEI is surrounded by miles of red sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches, and pristine waters that are home to an abundance of wildlife.

The Island’s capital city, Charlottetown, is a vibrant waterfront community and the departure point for Peake’s Wharf Boat Tours. From the harbour, visitors can explore scenic coastlines, working lobster grounds, and natural habitats that make PEI one of the best places in Atlantic Canada to experience marine wildlife up close.

PEI’s surrounding waters, including the Northumberland Strait, are known for being relatively warm and calm compared to other Atlantic regions, creating ideal conditions for both marine life and enjoyable boat tours.

Marine Wildlife You May See

The waters around PEI are full of life. On your tour, you may encounter:

Harbour Seals and Grey Seals
Seals are the most commonly spotted marine mammals around PEI. They are curious, playful, and often surface near boats to take a look at visitors.

Fish Species
Depending on the season, you may see mackerel, herring, flounder, and occasionally tuna. Lobster traps are also commonly seen, offering a glimpse into PEI’s famous lobster fishery.

Occasional Whale Sightings
While not guaranteed, whales such as minke whales and pilot whales are sometimes spotted in the Gulf, especially later in the season.

Other Marine Life
You may also see jellyfish, starfish, and crabs in the clear Island waters.
